A fragmentary history unfolds around a newly redesigned shopping center attached to the busiest railway station in the Netherlands. Originally designed in the 1960s as a solution to traffic problems in the city, today its owners describe the shopping center as “a medium in itself,” combining physical traffic with social networks in order to transform “customer exposure to a product into a physical purchase.” Can such an architecture be seen as exemplary of media in general today?
